Kansas Families for Education Foundation was the proud sponsor of “Statehouse Reporter for a Day,” in conjunction with Kansas Scholastic Press Association.

Nearly 50 high school journalism students from across the state of Kansas came together in Topeka at the State Capitol on January 28th to interview legislators about the funding crisis facing their schools.

In the morning the students heard from a panel of statehouse journalist and learned the ropes. Students held a morning press conference and invited legislators from their districts, legislative leadership, and members of both the House and Senate education committees.

KFEF held a luncheon where First Lady Stacy Parkinson shared her and the Governor’s values about public education and their vision for public policy. Also on hand to answer questions were Mark Tallman, Kansas Association of School Boards and Mark Desetti, Kansas National Education Association.

To finish their day at the Capitol, students met individually with over 25 members of the state legislature. Student journalists asked some of the most thought provoking questions!

On February 11th Kansas Scholastic Press Association announced the competition winners from Statehouse Reporter for a Day. The choices were difficult, as all these students produced excellent media for their schools. The true winners are the citizens of Kansas who will benefit in the future from the academic excellence we have afforded our students to date.
